About Alpaca Wool

Alpaca is an elite wool, fast moving to the top of a group of fibres, known as ‘Speciality Fibres’, which stipulates it must be rare and extremely fine. Alpacas are cousins to Llamas but smaller in size and originate in South America. There are approximately 3 million alpaca living worldwide; 98% of them still live in Peru, Chile and Bolivia. The alpaca has co-existed with man for over 5 thousand years. They were treasured by the ancient ancestors of the Inca, who measured their wealth by the number of alpacas they owned and who draped themselves in fine woven garments, made from the fleece of their prized herds.

Alpaca is a strong resilient fibre, but very soft and lightweight. It has a high thermal capacity and breathes better than other thermal knits, which helps keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
